UTILITY MAINTENANCE WORKER I

Reports To: Utility Maintenance Foreman  Department: Utility Maintenance

JOB FUNCTION:

Position is responsible for the performance of a variety of semi-skilled and manual work in the construction, installation, and maintenance of water, and sewer utility mains and services. Work involves the performance of a variety of maintenance activities as related to the Parish sewer and water utility systems. Work is generally performed under immediate supervision. The individual holding this position is expected to exercise some initiative and judgment in the performance of duties. In most instances, however, the proper work method and equipment is determined by the Utility Maintenance Foreman.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Excavate, grade, and shore up trenches for the installation or maintenance of water mains and/or services.
  2. Tap pipelines and installs or repairs valves, hydrants, meters, and pipes of all sizes.
  3. Measure, cut and fit pipe.
  4. Locate leaks and make repairs by installing clamps or other approved devices.
  5. Fit pipe sections together and inserts seals.
  6. Set new water meters.
  7. Operate the tapping machine, and hand tools for cutting pipes, and repairing valves, hydrants, and meters.
  8. Operate excavator, truck, and ditch witch trencher.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. May receive and resolve or refer citizen complaints.
  2. Perform other duties as may be assigned by the foreman.
  3. Must be available to report to work on an as-needed basis.
  4. Must have the ability to maintain pleasant and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties, to include elected officials, the general public and other employees.
  5. Requires extensive physical ability to sustain long periods of extreme heat, cold, noise and exposure to all types of inclement weather, and threatening conditions and situations fix considerable amounts of time, must be capable lifting, stooping, crawling, climbing and pulling.
  6. Must have the mental capability and stamina to think clearly and make sound decisions during times of emergency.
  7. Must possess a valid Louisiana driver's license and be capable of safely handling all departmental vehicles and equipment.
  8. Must pass Water Distribution & Production Class I within 2 years of employment.Salary is based on a ten (10) step pay scale.
  9. Merit pay is based upon employee's completion of probation and the passing of Class I, II & III Distribution, Production, Treatment and Waste Water Tests.
  10. Carry water department callout pager to be able to respond to emergency situations.
  11. Must be able to train, learn to operate elementary computer data entry and work order completion/generation.
  12. Must have high school education or GED.
